Did it run?
An independent record of whether New Zealand's buses and trains actually ran: which trips were cancelled, which ran late, and which were scheduled but never showed up.
What it's for
Check your route
See how often your bus route or train line is cancelled or late, which weekdays are worst, and which departures fail most often.
See what's happening now
Every bus and train on a live map, coloured by how late it is, with today's cancellations and current and planned disruptions.

How it works
- Live tracking. We read each operator's real-time feed (Metlink, Auckland Transport, Metro) every 30 seconds and keep a record of every scheduled trip: whether it appeared, whether it was cancelled, and how late it ran. That record starts on 28 October 2026.
- Wellington bus history. Metlink publishes daily figures for every bus route back to July 2018. We load these as they're released.
- Auckland history. Auckland Transport published daily figures for every bus route from January 2019 to February 2023, and has published only monthly route and train line figures since. We load both, and from 28 October 2026 our own record fills in every day.
- Wellington train history. Metlink's monthly performance reports give train reliability and punctuality, by line from mid-2023 and for the whole network back to 2019.
What the numbers mean
- Reliability is the share of scheduled trips that ran.
- Punctuality for buses means leaving the first stop no more than about 1 minute early or 5 minutes late. For trains it means arriving at key stations within 5 minutes.
- Not tracked means a trip was scheduled but never appeared in the real-time feed. Either it didn't run or its tracking was off. Either way, passengers couldn't rely on it, so it counts against the route.
About
Did It Run? was developed by Precedent IT as a public-interest project. It is unofficial and not affiliated with Metlink, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Auckland Transport, Environment Canterbury, Metro or any operator. Figures come from Metlink Open Data (CC BY 4.0), Auckland Transport open data and Environment Canterbury Metro open data. Our own trip-level figures are new and become more meaningful as weeks of data build up. If you use “show my location” on a map, your position stays on your device and is never sent to us.
